The conference hall of Union Bank of Cameroon on Tuesday November 3, 2009 played host to the Minister of Employment and Vocational Training, Zacharie Perevet, and his entourage. The meeting with UBC management started shortly after the Minister’s arrival at 10:58 am. On hand to welcome the honorable minister and his entourage were the General Manager/CEO of Union Bank, his assistant and about all the top management staff of the institution. In his opening address, the General Manager welcomed the Minister and his entourage stating that it was not every day Union Bank received such high-profile guests.
He went ahead to present Union Bank and the partnership that it entered into with the Oceanic Bank International, and also cited the Cameroon Credit Union League (CamCCUL) as another major stakeholder of the bank. Briefly, the GM recalled that Oceanic Bank of Nigeria and Union Bank of Cameroon rank among the leading banks in their respective countries, before specifying that Union Bank of Cameroon is the most capitalized bank in Cameroon with a share capital of FCFA 20billion. This remark drew a thunderous applause from the guests. Like Oceanic Bank in Nigeria, he said, Union Bank of Cameroon has as objective to develop the country’s economy. This statement was further supported by the Human Resource manager who briefed the guests on the bank’s recruitment policy, staff development and capacity building.
The Minister on his part thanked the General Manager and his collaborators for the warm welcome and for what they have done in Cameroon so far. He said they came to listen because of the unemployment problem in Cameroon. He revealed that his Ministry has since 2007 launched a crusade to absorb the multitudes of Cameroonians that leave school every year and that a crusade calls for everyone’s participation. We must absorb the numerous youths, he said, because they could be dangerous if we don’t - an idle mind being the devil’s workshop. The Minister said they are working with the Ministry of Youth Affairs in this regard before saluting UBC for the employment it offers so many Cameroonians and the training it gives its staff. He encouraged the bank to continue in this light. Lastly and most importantly, the Minister commended the bank for its young and dynamic staff – an indication that unlike other banks, UBC is building on the youths for a better tomorrow. He equally recognized the balanced gender representation in the bank’s labour force. The visit ended with a family photograph and a guided tour of the institution. Source: In-house |
